Jack Black looks set to play Steve in the Minecraft film, which is finally about to start shooting. More here:

Jack Black is just about to hit the promotional trail for Kung Fu Panda 4, which releases this March. But now Black has another family movie to add to his slate, with the news that he’s the latest addition to the long-mooted Minecraft movie.

The Minecraft film – based on the videogame of the same name – has been talked about for the best part of a decade, and it’s gone through a few personnel in that time. But it’s actually pushing forward now, with Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess directing. Furthermore, Jason Momoa has been confirmed for the cast for some time now, and the plan had been to get the movie shooting last summer – at least until the Hollywood actor’s strike ground things to a halt.

Well, things are unground now, and over in New Zealand, production is ramping up on Minecraft, with Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen also on the call sheet. And Jack Black has become the fresh addition to it, per Deadline. It’s not been revealed what his role in the film will be, but it’s widely believed to be one of the two main protagonists, Steve.

Filming is getting underway imminently on the movie, and it’ll mix up live action and animation, presumably along the lines of the Sonic The Hedgehog films (the third of which has now wrapped filming, ahead of its 2025 release).

The Minecraft movie currently has a release date set for April 2025. It’s unclear as of yet whether the strike delays will lead to a knock on with the release date being pushed back. For the minute, Warner Bros appears to be holding it at April, but – as always – we’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

Must end with some gag about blockbusters or something, that’ll make sense to Minecraft fans…
