Netflix price packages in the UK are rising by as much as 20%, and customers are being given the news as emails go out.

As had been noted at the start of the month, streaming giant Netflix is putting its prices up in the UK, and emails have started going out to customers to explain the latest increase.

The price rises hadn’t been much of a surprise, and Netflix last raised them over here back in October 2023. Still, it’s making it for it with some above inflation hikes. The current UK rate of inflation sits at 3%, for the standard Netflix subscription with adverts is moving from £4.99 a month to £5.99 a month. That’s a 20% jump.

The most popular Netflix plan, the standard package without adverts, has now gone from £10.99 to £12.99, an 18% rise. The premium package is going from £17.99 to £18.99, an increase of 5.5%.

The email announcing the increase to customers comes with the subject ‘price update coming soon’, presumably because ‘inflation-busting price rises’ didn’t scan very well. The rise comes into effect in March, and the email also adds that “Youā€™ll always find something youā€™ll want to watch, keeping you up to date on all the latest trending titles. Next month alone, we’re releasing 99 series and films! Whether you want to revisit old favourites or discover something new, we’ve got you covered.”

Netflix argued earlier this year that “We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix”, and it has duly done that. It’s doing what pretty much every other streamer has done, yet there must come a tipping point, I’d imagine. We’re not at that stage yet, but how high can prices be driven before customers start cancelling their subscriptions? Be interested in people’s thoughts on that in the comments.

In the meantime, in fairness to Netflix its output is prolific, arguably more so than its competitors. Sitting on record subscriber numbers too, and about to get more money out of them too, it’s been a pretty good 12 months for the streamer.

The $300m+ movie The Electric State ā€“ Netflixā€™s most expensive to date ā€“ arrives on 14th March 2025.
