Scoop is set to tell the story of how Prince Andrew came to appear on Newsnight, and give a perfectly normal and not at all odd interview.

News from Netflix is that it’s gone into production on Scoop, a brand new feature film giving the inside account of Prince Andrew’s interview with the BBC’s Newsnight programme. You might remember the one. It involved lack of sweat, and the Woking brand of Pizza Express.

The film is based on Sam McAlister’s memoir, and Philip Martin (wh’s worked on The Crown and Prime Suspect, amongst others.

Gillian Anderson will take on the role of Newsnight host and interviewer Emily Maitlis. Rufus Sewell gets the, er, honour of playing Prince Andrew, with Keeley Hawes playing his former private secretary, Amanda Thirsk. And then Sam McAlister – who booked the Newsnight interview – is to be portrayed in the film by Billie Piper.

An official synopsis has been released too. It reads…

The inside track of the women that broke through the Buckingham Palace establishment to secure the scoop of the decade that led to the catastrophic fall from grace of The Queen’s ‘Favourite son’. From navigating Palace vetoes, to breaking through to Prince Andrew’s inner circle, the high stakes negotiations and intensity of rehearsal – to the jaw dropping interview itself. SCOOP is the insider account of the inner workings of the Palace and the BBC, twin bastions of the British Establishment, spotlighting the journalists whose tenacity and guts broke through the highest of ceilings – and into the inner sanctum and calculations of a man with everything to lose.

Production is underway now in the UK. No news of a release date yet, but don’t be surprised if Netflix tries to launch the film before the year is out…
