Richard Curtis is returning to the world of Christmas comedies for the first time since Love Actually with a new movie: Paapa Essiedu has joined the cast.

It isn’t long since the film world went through it’s annual festive discourse about Love Actually and its various problematic elements. And the man behind that film is back in the world of festive cinema soon.

Richard Curtis will soon be returning to the Yuletide movie world with an as yet untitled Christmas comedy for regular partner Working Title Pictures, along with streaming service Peacock. The plot will follow a workaholic who enlists the help of a genie whose magic can help him reunite with his family before Christmas.

If this all sound familiar, it’s because Curtis wrote a similar film for the BBC in 1991, the terrific Bernard And The Genie, which is currently available to stream on BritBox, but will be leaving the service in two weeks.

It has now been reported that I May Destroy You actor Paapa Essiedu will star opposite the already announced Melissa McCarthy in this particular production.

Sam Boyd with direct from Curtis’ screenplay, with Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner producing alongside Riva Marker.

There is no release date as yet, though we’d put a fair bet on this one being in cinemas/on streaming services in time for next Christmas.
