The departure of director Matt Shakman has seen Paramount put the brakes on its next Star Trek film, at least for the moment.
Whilst the Star Trek franchise is having a very fine time on the small screen at the moment, Paramount’s attempts to get a new feature film moving are proving far more troublesome. Earlier this year though, it seemed as though the impasse had been broken, with the news that a fresh adventure for the incumbent big screen crew was on the way. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho may not have all been aware the film was happening when the studio announced it, but things seemed to be settling towards a planned December 2023 release.
The latest fly in the ointment though came when director Matt Shakman departed the bridge over the summer. He was lured back to Camp Marvel – where he’d helmed the WandaVision show – to direct Fantastic Four. And that’s left the new Star Trek movie without a director, some 15 months ahead of its planned release date.
Thus, it’s not really a surprise that Paramount has announced that the movie has now dropped off its release schedule for the moment. That December 2023 date will no longer be hit, and presumably the studio will continue the hunt for someone else to take the project on. Given that Paramount is after an ongoing franchise of these films again, it’s still likely to be keen to get this chapter going. We’ll keep you posted as and when we hear more.
