Peaky Blinders creator trying to develop a new media village in Birmingham

Plans are afoot to bring a new media hub to Birmingham.

Steven Knight, the writer and creator of Peaky Blinders – amongst many other projects – has been working the past few years to develop a studio space in the West Midlands. His Mercian Studios project is slowly coming to fruition, and more details are expected soon.

But Knight isn’t done. He’s now also revealed to Radio 4 – as reported by The Birmingham Development Blog – that he’s in talks for a Birmingham city centre base too.

Knight revealed that he’s chatting to a city centre landlord about acquiring a 34-40 acre site of land, with the aim of developing a brand new media village in the city. Whether this is on top of or as well as the Mercian Studios project remains to be seen. But Knight, through both his film and TV work, has been keen to set up a Midlands base for screen production. And it looks like he’s getting closer to his goal.

Incidentally, you can hear more from Knight on his Mercian Studios project in the special podcast episode we recorded with him earlier this year. You can find that here.
