Piglets series 2 has been confirmed by ITV, with the cast and crew returning for a new bunch of episodes. More here.

Green Wing is one of the most memorable comedies of the early 2000s. Following the trials and tribulations of the staff who populate East Hampton Hospital, the writing was frequently silly and surreal, and it featured star making turns from the likes of Tamsin Greig, Stephen Mangan and Michelle Gomez.

Underrated comedy Campus followed a similar scenario, this time in the fictional Kirke University, where Andy Nyman’s domineering don Jonty De Wolfe ruled with an iron fist. That series has also built up quite a fanbase, and earlier this year the same creative team made police sitcom Piglets. Which is what brought us to here.

While critical reception was less than stellar, the series achieved good viewing figures and according to the British Comedy Guide, cast member Ricky Chap revealed on a podcast that ITV has now recommissioned the show for a second series. Presumably the plan will be to get Piglets series 2 on screens next year.

The synopsis for the first series reads as follows:

The government’s stated policy of recruiting 20,000 new police officers in double quick time has not come at the cost of lowering standards. Or has it? Piglets follows a newly recruited group of six very different would-be cops and the handful of key staff whose thankless task it is to knock them into some kind of shape.

Heading up the cast are Sarah Parish and Mark Heap as Superintendent Julie Spry and Superintendent Bob Weekes, whose job it is to oversee the training of the next batch of new recruits.

Those new recruits are Steph (played by Callie Cooke), Leggo (Sam Pote), Geeta (Sukh Kaur Ojla) Afia (Halema Hussain), Dev (Abdul Sessay) and Paul (Jamie Bisping).

Rounding out the ensemble are Head of Admin Melanie (Rebecca Humphries) and police trainers Mike & Daz (Ukweli Roach and Ricky Champ).

The show is written by Robert Harley, James Henry, Oriane Messina, Victoria Pile, Richard Preddy, Fay Rusling and ITV’s Comedy Writers Initiative candidate Omar Khan.

You can watch the first series of Piglets on ITVX.
