Oscar-winner Mikey Madison looks set to jump from Anora to Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil film: more here.
In the wake of Mikey Madison’s performance in last year’s awards magnet Anora, the 26 year old star appears to be about to do something rather awe-inspiring with her soaring career: walk The Path of the Cage.
After winning the Best Actor Oscar in 1996 for Leaving Las Vegas, Nicolas Cage took a mighty career swerve and made a trio of beloved action movies. It was a bold choice that resulted in The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off, all released between 1996 and 1997. We’ve been waiting ever since for somebody to try to match the boldness of Cage’s intrepid move.
Enter then, Mikey Madison.
Hot off Anora, Madison is reportedly (according to World Of Reel) taking the lead female role in Zach Cregger’s upcoming take on Resident Evil, the popular survival horror videogame series that has been adapted for the screen several times before.
Madison is set to join Euphoria's Austin Abrams as the film’s lead duo, jumping from prestigious drama to the thrills of genre filmmaking. Should this report prove to be accurate, though, Madison isn’t just working with anybody. Much like Cage, who picked out the most gifted filmmakers in the action genre, she’s choosing to collaborate with Cregger, seen as one of horror’s brightest stars after the wild critical reception to 2022’s Barbarian.
If you need further convincing about the regard in which Cregger is held by studios, the reported $20m fee that he’s being paid for directing Resident Evil for Sony is proof of that. (Sony really, really wants a franchise out of this film, we’d imagine…)
World Of Reel also offers up a rumoured plot for the film, which is set to shoot this autumn and release in September of 2026: it’s set ‘to follow a hapless courier (Abrams) tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He soon finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive.’
It doesn’t sound like any of the games that we can recall, but then again, there are a lot of games in the Capcom series, so if you do recognise that plot thread from the many titles in the series’ history, do let us know in the comments.
We’ll bring you more on Resident Evil's casting as we hear it. And should Mikey Madison take any more steps in the vein of the mighty Cage, we’ll most certainly keep you posted right here. Con Air 2, perhaps?
