The 2000AD adaptation Rogue Trooper, from director Duncan Jones, is edging closer. And the director has revealed a first look.

Duncan Jones and lots of other talented people have been squirreling away for several years now on an adaptation of Rogue Trooper, an upcoming animated take on the classic comic book series that like so many other weird and wonderful characters, originated in the pages of 2000AD.

Production on the film wrapped last year and now we’ve been granted our first look at the project courtesy of several still images which were unveiled to the world by Empire and on Duncan Jones’ social media feed.

The film has been using Epic’s software platform Unreal Engine 5 to bring the comic strip’s trademark visuals to life. Although Unreal is more widely known as a game engine, it recent widely-publicised use in The Mandalorian demonstrates that increasing numbers of filmmakers are now using the tool too.

The cast for this one is rather compelling, with Aneurin Barnard playing Rogue alongside Hayley Atwell, Reece Shearsmith, Jack Lowden, Jemaine Clement, Alice Lowe, Asa Butterfield, and Sean Bean. The actors have also lent their facial performances to the film too, as you may well recognise in the images below.

The film has been slated for release in 2025 by Liberty FIlms and Rebellion although according to World Of Reel, is still lacking a distributor.

Rogue Trooper will mark Jones’ first film since 2018’s Mute, a cyberpunk adventure film that was produced with Netflix. Whilst that film received a mixed response, Jones is the filmmaker behind Moon and Source Code, so any project that sees him turn his creative energies towards the weird or the offbeat is going to be a must-watch, doubly so when the inspiration for the project comes straight from the pages of the mighty 2000AD.

We’re likely to hear more on the status of Rogue Trooper in fairly short order, but until we do, check out the images below.
