Popular animated series Rugrats is heading back to the big screen, this time in a film which will include a hybrid of live action and animation.
Rugrats was one of the most popular childrenās shows of the 1990s. Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, the series followed the midadventures of five infants ā Tommy, Phil and Lil, Chuckie and Anjelica. It ran for nine seasons between 1991 and 2004.
The show became popular enough that in 1998 feature film The Rugrats Movie arrived in cinemas. This was followed in 2000 by Rugrats In Paris. In 2003, Rugrats Go Wild, which was a crossover with Klasky and Csupóās other hit show The Wild Thornberrys, was released.
Spin-off series All Grown Up! ran for five seasons between 2003 and 2008. series of a CGI reboot of Rugrats was made for Paramount+ between 2021 and 2023, but it was removed from the streaming service in March this year.
According to Deadline, the show is now heading back to the big screen in a feature film, a movie that will incorporate live action and animation for the first time in the history of the franchise.
Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore will helm the film from a script by Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day ā if you havenāt seen the sketch where Day and Ryan Gosling are dressed as Beavis and Butthead, it is well worth five minutes of your time ā and Streeter Seidell. Klasky and Csupó are producing alongside Karen Rosenfelt for Paramount.
The plot is being kept under wraps for now, and there is currently no confirmation of voice cast. For the 2021 reboot, original voice actors E.G. Daily, Nancy Cartwright, Cheryl Chase and Kath Soucie reprised the roles of Tommy, Chuckie, Anjelica and Phil and Lil respectively.
