It’s Whiplash meets Being The Ricardos in the first trailer for Jason Reitman’s SNL comedy-thriller. Check out the Saturday Night trailer below:
If you’ve ever looked at the behind-the-scenes of an episode of SNL and thought: “that doesn’t look anxiety-inducing enough”, then Jason Reitman has the trailer for you.
Last week, we got the news that Saturday Night, the making-of story behind one of the most successful variety shows in US history, is heading for an 11th October release date in the US, and now we’ve got a trailer to go along with it. Starring The Fabelmans breakout Gabriel LaBelle as the show’s famed producer, Lorne Michaels, the footage revolves around a cosy corridor chat between him and Cooper Hoffman’s NBC executive, Dick Ebersol.
Take a look at the Saturday Night trailer below:
The film reportedly revolves around the 90 minutes before the first broadcast of Michaels’ comedy darling, Saturday Night (the Live wouldn’t get added on until 1980), and not a lot seems to be going very well.
50 seasons later, SNL remains a strange miracle of admin and TV logistics, but you wouldn’t know that from this trailer. Rebellious cast and crew, a bunch of variously sinister-looking NBC-types and more f-bombs than the show itself has ever allowed on the air, it looks like Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan aren’t pulling many punches in their view into the pilot’s infamous production.
As Hoffman explains in the trailer, after all: SNL is just “90 minutes of live television by a group of 20-year-olds who’ve never made anything…” What could possibly go wrong?
Saturday Night arrives in US cinemas on 11th October. A UK release date hasn’t yet been confirmed.
