Scarlett Johansson’s reported salary requests have been made public in her continued case against Disney. Although Disney is attempting to take the pending legal action with Scarlet Johansson behind closed doors, the actor and her legal representatives are, for the moment, responding in a very public fashion, meaning details of the fallout continue to leak. The matter is focused on Johansson’s contract for Black Widow, which she claims Disney reneged on when it elected to give the film a dual release, both in cinemas and on Disney+. This in turn negatively affected the actor’s backend deal for the film, and Johansson is therefore taking Disney to court for what she alleges is breach of contract. Now, according to the Wall St Journal, when Disney made the choice to plump for a dual release in cinemas and on their streaming platform, Johansson tried to renegotiate her contract so she would be paid what she was projected to originally earn, and that figure comes to $100m, including a $20m upfront salary. Reports also suggest that Disney’s failure to respond to her appeals simply came down to a lack of communication between executives, which if so, could prove to be a costly error for the company. It’s certainly an eye-watering amount of cash, and if that’s what Johansson was genuinely projected to earn, you can understand why she’s willing to fight for what she believes she is owed in court. It remains staggering, and un-Disney like, that this is now being played out in the open. Whilst it’s possible this never even gets to court, or remains behind closed doors if it does, for the moment the publicity swirling around the matter is not good for Disney and it very much knows it.
