Franchise stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall are returning for horror spoof reboot Scary Movie 6, due out next June.
Update 15th August 2025: “No mercy. No shame. No sequel,” ran the tagline for the original Scary Movie. The latter part of the blurb didn’t remain true for long: we had no fewer than four sequels released between 2001 and 2013. Then things went a bit quite, before screenwriters Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans announced plans to write a sixth film in the horror spoof franchise last year.
Scary Movie 6 is now due scheduled for release in June 2026, with filming set to begin this October. As the production gears up, there’s been a logical yet significant casting announcement: series regulars Anna Farris and Regina Hall are returning to reprise their roles of (respectively) Cindy and Brenda.
A joint statement from the actors, published by The Hollywood Reporter, reads: โWe canโt wait to bring Brenda and Cindy back to life and be reunited with our great friends Keenen, Shawn and Marlon โ three men weโd literally die for (in Brendaโs case, again).โ
The original Scary Movie debuted in 2000, and skewered the slasher stylings of Scream (itself a kind of genre parody) and other horror films capturing the zeitgeist at the turn of the millennium. Parody movies of this sort fell out of fashion for quite a stretch, perhaps because the films themselves appeared to run out of ideas, though it now appears to be back in vogue with the (really rather good) Naked Gun reboot and a Space Balls sequel on the way.
Horror has been a big genre in recent years, so maybe now’s the right time for a movie that pokes at the foibles seen in the output of Blumhouse, A24 and the like.
Our original story follows…
30th October 2024: Scary Movie arrived at exactly the right time to capture the cultural zeitgeist in 2000. Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer were ripe for ribbing, and in Anna Faris and Regina Hall they found the perfect blend of silliness and deadpan reactions that the central characters of Cindy and Brenda needed to make the film work.
According to Deadline, Shawn, Marlon and Keenan Wayans are reuniting for the first time in 18 years to write Scary Movie 6 for Miramax and Paramount. They will also produce with Rick Alvarez. With the popularity of the Terrifier films and recent legacy sequels and prequels in the Scream and Saw franchises, there’s no shortage of material for them to draw on.
The Wayans said, “We couldnโt be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. Itโs a double reunion.”
As you’ve probably gathered, Scary Movie has already garnered a number of sequels, which spanned from 2001 to just over a decade ago. Scary Movie 2, as with most sequels, upped the budget and the gag quota, adding the always brilliant Tim Curry and a particularly funny turn from Chris Elliott.

Airplane’s David Zucker took over directorial duties for sequels 3 and 4, and by the time Malcolm D Lee directed Scary Movie 5 in 2013 it was clear the franchise needed a rest.
Series star Faris said earlier this year that she would be willing to return to the franchise if Hall came back with her. Here’s hoping they avoid the Scream franchise’s Neve Campbell situation, in which the actor refused to reprise her signature role as Sidney Prescott because producers initially refused to pay her a decent salary. She was finally coaxed back for Scream VII this year when the original plans for the franchise dramatically fell apart. Or maybe that very public falling out will also be lampooned in Scary Movie 6.
We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
