Derek Kolstad – of the John Wick saga – is writing and producing a big screen take on the 1990s Sega game franchise Streets Of Rage.

Dig out your Sega Megadrive and find a host of new movie ideas: that seems to be the latest plan in Hollywood, and bluntly, we’ve heard worse.

The lucky recipient of this is the 1990s beat ‘em up Streets Of Rage, that I was pretty terrible at, but that’s of little relevance to this story. Still, it was hardly Target: Renegade on the ZX Spectrum was it?

That notwithstanding, Derek Kolstad, whose pen has previously slaved over the John Wick franchise, has been hired to write a screenplay for a Streets Of Rage film, and he’s also going to produce it too.

The game has been optioned by Lionsgate, who in turn will be backing the project. No word as of yet as to who’s going to be directing and/or kicking the living bejesus out of each other on screen. But the core story of former police officers going after a crime syndicate is likely to remain in tact.

More on this one as we hear it. In the meantime, the highest profile Sega movie currently in the works remains the third Sonic The Hedgehog film. That’s due in 2024, and is likely to, er, be very different from the Streets Of Rage movie.
