The Mark Wahlberg-headlined Father Stu is being recut and re-released in a more family-friendly form in time for Christmas.

Father Stu is a film that pretty much came and went earlier in the year, but it’s one that’s been something of a passion project for its star, Mark Wahlberg.

Wahlberg takes the role of an amateur boxer who turns to faith and becomes a Catholic priest, and the film explores the impact that has on his life and the people around him. Released in an R-rated version in the US, the movie earned a 15 in the UK for its fruity language. Now, there’s been something of a rethink though, and in America at least, Father Stu is getting a cinematic resurrection.

The film has been cut down so that it can get a softer rating in America, and it’s going back into cinemas with a slightly different version. Now called – yep – Father Stu: Reborn, the softer cut, which now comes with a PG-13 rating. It hits US cinemas on December 9th, although there’s little sign of a UK re-release. But Wahlberg and co will be hoping that a faith-based film, with a broader certificate, might just find the audience it lost out on first time around.

If it works, expect other films to try the same trick? If it doesn’t? Well, pretty much as you were.

If you want to catch the harsher cut of the film in the UK, it’s on Prime Video now.
