Spaceballs 2 will be heading into cinemas in 2027, it’s been confirmed. And the original cast has been invited back. More here.

It’s been around a year since we learned that the 1987 Star Wars spoof Spaceballs is returning with a sequel, and although we’re still a couple of years out from the film’s release, we now have some juicy details to feast on. Josh Greenbaum will direct from a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad.

While several of the original film’s cast are no longer with us (including Joan Rivers and John Candy) several key players from the original film are returning.

Rick Moranis is set to unretire, presumably to return as Dark Helmet, while the legendary Mel Brooks will be appearing, likely as the mighty Yoghurt.

Bill Pullman is also set to reprise his role as Lone Starr, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, could be joined by his son Lewis who we recently saw putting in an effective turn as the rather troubled Bob in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*.

Clearly nothing related to A Galaxy Far, Far Way (or other modern franchise movies) is going to be safe here, with even the upcoming Spaceballs 2 logline having a pop at the modern Hollywood climate. Apparently it’s a “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film”. Oh crumbs.

Star Wars in particular has offered up some exceedingly low-hanging fruit over the past few years to those that wish to lampoon it, with a particular South Park episode last year enjoying plenty of success in that regard.

We’d imagine that Spaceballs 2's skewering of the decades-long space fantasy series will be a little more affectionate – but who knows? The Star Wars franchise certainly isn’t in the kind of rude health that it once was, especially following the success of the original trilogy when the original Spaceballs released.

There’s even an announcement video for us to enjoy, for this movie which we’ll happily post below. Here at Film Stories, we’re always keen to support Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Films. More on Spaceballs 2 as we hear it.
