Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Pascal Productions’ Amy Pascal have spoken jointly to confirm that another Spider-Man movie, presumably featuring Tom Holland, is on the way.
Spider-Man: No Way Home released last week and
has done some incredible numbers, proving, in case there happened to be any doubt, that audiences even in these trying times are enamoured with the current take on the character, a co-production between Sony and Marvel Studios. After the release of its predecessor,
Far From Home, Spidey fans faced an anxious wait as Sony and Disney – Marvel’s parent company – engaged in a public game of high-stakes corporate bluff, with the fate of Tom Holland’s webslinger hanging in the balance.
Thankfully, it seems there will be no repeat of those shenanigans this time, with Pascal and Feige presenting a united front to declare to
the New York Times that we will definitely see more of the current
Spider-Man.
“Amy and I and Disney and Sony are talking about — yes, we’re actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don’t want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after
Far From Home”. Feige said. “That will not be occurring this time.”
This confirms the arrangement that Tom Holland hinted at last week, meaning all is in place for at least one more film featuring Holland as Spider-Man.
Whilst it means that fans of the Miles Morales iteration may have to wait a little longer to see a live-action version of that character, it does mean that this is the first time in three
Spider-Man franchises where we’ll get to see a fourth installment. If there’s a critique of Sony’s handling of the character, it’s that it’s always rebooted Peter Parker back to his high school roots, meaning it’s a story we’ve seen several times now. With a fourth film on the way in the current series, perhaps we can see the character operate in spaces that are less familiar (indeed, we have some thoughts
here). Holland has spoken in the past about wanting to play a ‘mentor’ role at some point, so it’s quite possible that the next film could see him training another Spidey to take the mantle.
Pascal spoke a couple of weeks ago about another trilogy, and whilst nobody else has been quick to chime in on that idea, she’s still looking to take the current incarnation of the character as far as it can go, adding “we’re producers, so we always believe everything will work out. I love working with Kevin. We have a great partnership, along with Tom Rothman, who runs Sony and has been instrumental, a great leader with great ideas,” she said. “I hope it lasts forever.”
More as we hear it.
