Paramount is making another effort to make Star Trek 4 happen, with The Flight Attendant writer Steve Yockey behind the script.
Eight years on from Star Trek: Beyond, Paramount and Bad Robot are still trying to get a sequel together that reunites the series’ cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban
The name behind this latest attempt is screenwriter Steve Yockey, who’s best known for TV series The Flight Attendant – a comedy murder mystery starring Kaley Cuoco. Yockey also wrote episodes of Supernatural and the Scream TV spin-off series.
Nothing else is known about the project at present, though Variety reports that Paramount hopes to get the core cast first established in 2009’s Star Trek, which also includes Zoe Saldana and John Cho. The glaring exception will of course be Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away in 2016.
This latest drive to make Trek happen comes in the wake of several other abortive attempts since 2016. Previous writers and filmmakers included Matt Shakman, who’s now making a Fantastic Four film for Marvel, Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley. Rings Of Power writers Patrick McKay and JD Payne also had a go, but their “cosmic quirk” concept, which they described as “Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade in space” didn’t go anywhere, either.
As recently as November 2023, Chris Pine sounded somewhat downbeat about the prospects of starring as James T Kirk again. When asked whether he’d seen a script, he said, “Of course not.”
“In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything,” he’d previously said earlier that year. “I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors.”
If Paramount and Bad Robot are really serious about all this, they probably need to send Chris Pine some flowers. Or at any rate a really big cheque.
