Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy head up a fun cast for the upcoming animated feature based on the Super Mario Bros games.

Nintendo has given us a few details about its upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated film, including some of the cast that will be voicing the iconic characters, plus a release date for the US at least. First up, the film has been set for a 21st December 2022 release, with Nintendo aiming to capitalise on the Christmas holidays and make a sizeable splash with the film’s launch. The date also keeps the Italian plumber’s movie far, far away from the sequel entrant of his old rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, whose second film releases much earlier, in April of 2022.

Casting has also been announced and well, it looks like a whole lot of fun. Chris Pratt will star as Mario, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach. Jack Black will play Bowser whilst Keegan-Michael Key will play everybody’s favourite humanoid mushroom person, Toad, whilst Seth Rogen will feature as Donkey Kong.

Whilst no casting has been announced for Mario’s brother Luigi as of yet, other names attached to the project are Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. The film was first announced back in 2018 and is expected to follow closer to the source material than the 1993 live action film which was, it would be fair to say, not well received.
