Taika Waititi starts shooting his new movie, as the UK still awaits his last one.
That Taika Waititi, what a busy guy he is. Still, that’s the price of success we suppose. Whilst developing Thor: Blood and Thuunder for Marvel and doing press rounds for his WWII satire, Jojo Rabbit, the director has now begun preproduction on his next project, Next Goal Wins.
Working once again with Fox Searchlight (who made the announcement), Waititi is developing the story of the American Samoa football team in their struggle to transform from perennial whipping-boys into a FIFA World Cup-qualifying outfit. Waititi has co-written the script with Iain Morris, his writing partner from What we do in the Shadows, basing the story on a British 2014 documentary.
Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss, as well as Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Belulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Uli Latukefu and Rachel House are all set to appear. A classic sporting underdog story in the mould of Cool Runnings paired with the absurd humour of Waititi? Sounds like a born winner to us.
Meanwhile, the director’s previous film, Jojo Rabbit, hits these shores on January 3rd. The movie sees a young boy in WWII-era Germany befriend an imaginary pal that just happens to be Adolf Hitler. More updates as we have them.
