The Apprentice, Ali Abbasi’s film about Donald Trump’s early years, has set its UK release date for this October. More on it below.
After a successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Ali Abbasi’s feather-rustling biopic of Donald Trump, The Apprentice, is set to grace UK cinema screens this October.
Studio Canal, who nabbed the rights to the film in the UK, have announced that The Apprentice will be released on 18th October. The date does coincide with the BFI London Film Festival, leaving us to wonder whether the film might make its UK debut in the first few days of the festival before its cinema release. The release date also comes less than a month before the US election.
The film stars Sebastian Stan as Trump, who is currently running for President in the US. Succession star Jeremy Strong plays Roy Cohn while Martin Donovan plays Trump’s father, Fred Trump Sr. Maria Bakalova rounds out the cast as Ivana Trump.
Here’s an official synopsis: THE APPRENTICE is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire. It charts a young Donald Trump’s ascent to power through a Faustian deal with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn.
After the film’s world premiere in May, Trump threatened to seek legal action against the film. As we reported back in May, the film reportedly includes a non-consensual sex scene, drugs and a bald spot, which have greatly angered Trump and his team.
The film has had a terrible time finding a US distributor. All major players have stayed far away from Abbasi’s film, but Deadline reported in June that a deal with Briarcliff Entertainment was looking likely.
Catch The Apprentice in UK and Irish cinemas 18th October.
