Marvel Studios reportedly wants Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy director to take charge of The Avengers 5.

In what has so far been a summer characterised by underperforming tentpole films, all eyes are on the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine to get bums in cinema seats.

Because the film was pushed from its original May slot into late July, it will be a bit late to save what has so far been a dismal summer at the box office, but cinema operators will likely be happy to see the film no matter when it arrives.

Shawn Levy has directed the film and according to reports, the Free Guy director may well be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take on the biggest gig of them all: the next Avengers movie. The project (which was once called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) is in the process of undergoing major changes in the wake of Marvel parting ways with Jonathan Majors, the filmā€™s title character, not to mention the departure of Destin Daniel Cretton as director.

Loki writer Michael Waldron is working on a new version of Avengers 5, one that is widely expected to head in a different direction from the studioā€™s original plans. According to The Hollywood Reporter though, Marvel is keen to keep Levy involved and has given him the latest version of the script to have a look at.

The outlet states that this isnā€™t a done deal by any means. Levy may have finished Deadpool & Wolverine, but heā€™s a working producer on Netflixā€™s Stranger Things and as he has in the past, is set to direct a couple of episodes of the next and final season.

Thereā€™s also 21 Laps, his production company that needs to be run.

In short, heā€™s a busy guy, but the report indicates that Marvel is willing to push (or potentially already have decided to push) the release date of Avengers 5 further back. This time last year, the project was already delayed by a full year as Disney reckoned with the ongoing impact of the Hollywood strikes. Now it seems like a further delay of ā€˜several monthsā€™ is on the cards.

Other filmmakers are still reportedly in the mix, so this isnā€™t definite yet. If nothing else, the report indicates that Marvel must be pleased with the production of Deadpool & Wolverine if itā€™s keen to work with Levy again on such a crucial project. That bodes well for the imminent return of the Merc With A Mouth as Marvel looks to continue slowly righting its ship in the wake of a difficult few years. Weā€™ll bring you more on this story as it unfolds.
