With rumours growing for some time now suggesting this might be the case, it appears that The Batman: Part II could be moving ahead without director Matt Reeves.
An updated listing in Production Weekly – often a source for status updates in the screen industry – has The Batman: Part II down for a March 2026 shoot, a positive step forward for a project which has seemingly been stuck in development far longer than anybody expected. While the first film’s director Matt Reeves is listed as the project’s screenwriter, however, he’s no longer credited as its director.
World Of Reel has some potential insight into what could be a major development for the project. The site backs up the growing speculation that has been building for a few weeks now.
While the repeated delays naturally led to speculation that the project itself was in some kind of developmental trouble, it is now being suggested otherwise. Reeves will not be returning to helm the sequel, due, according to the outlet, due to a serious personal matter.
The sequel was officially announced at CinemaCon in April 2022 (not long after the first film came out), and Warner Bros is inevitably keen to get the most out of one of its most recognisable and valuable properties. The first film released to strong reviews, not least because of Reeves’ darkly stylised take on the Batman mythos which – within the space of one film – put Robert Pattinson, its incumbent Dark Knight, in the conversation for the best cinematic interpretation of the character.
Now it appears that the world and characters shaped by Reeves may have to be placed in the hands of another artist as the series continues. We’re sure we’re not alone in wishing Reeves and those around him all the best at what sounds like a difficult time.
