Hayao Miyazaki’s no-longer-final film, The Boy And The Heron, might have just revealed its UK release date – and it’s later this year! More below:

UPDATE: Elysian have (deliberately) confirmed the release date as 26 December. Turkey sandwich and Studio Ghibli, anyone?

Since The Boy And The Heron screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, the Studio Ghibli film once touted as animation legend Hayao Miyazaki’s last picture has been very coy about its UK release.

While the film released without a traditional marketing campaign in Japan to rave reviews this summer, American audiences will have to wait a wee while longer – the film’s releasing there on 8 December.

And now, thanks to the good people at Ghiblioteque, it looks like The Boy and the Heron might be getting a Boxing Day release in the UK.

UK distributors Elysian did say the film would make it over the pond before the end of the year, and while 26 December is cutting it a bit fine, the date makes a certain amount of sense.

The Boy And The Heron was supposed to be the last feature film from Miyazaki (who made such Studio Ghibli staples as Spirited AwayHowl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro) – until producer Toshio Suzuki told reporters “I can no longer stop him” (Miyazaki) working on his new project. The 82-year-old has, including Heron, 13 feature films and a whole bunch of TV series and shorts to his name but, contrary to earlier reports, is showing no signs of slowing down.
