Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s next film is all about Hollywood’s toxic beauty standards. Here’s the full The Substance trailer.
Mubi has released the full trailer for their upcoming body horror film by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance. In an age where trailers arguably reveal far too much, the full trailer ā which clocks in at just under 2 and a half minutes ā leaves things deliciously mysterious.
The trailer starts with Dennis Quaidās Harvey noisily chewing on shrimp as he unceremoniously informs Demi Mooreās Elisabeth Sparkle that sheās old to do her job as a celebrity fitness instructor. Elisabeth then decides to take advantage of the titular treatment which allows a younger, more perfect version of herself to take her place every other week as the two switch places every 7 days.
As the trailer shows, it doesnāt go very well.

Our original story followsā¦
11th July, 2024: Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance made quite the splash at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, the film takes a stab at Hollywood’s impossible beauty ideals and ageism, but the critics were somewhat divided on this.
MUBI has now announced that The Substance will hit cinemas 20th September in the UK and have released the very first teaser trailer for the film. The film will also be the Closing Night Film for this Augustās FrightFest.
Take a look at The Substance trailer below.
The trailer mostly just gives you the general vibe of Fargeat’s film, but we do know it follows Moore’s ageing Hollywood star who is fired from her job when she turns 50. She is then offered the opportunity to give birth to a younger, better version of herself with a miraculous substance. We can see this going very well.

The Substance trailer arrives with no official synopsis attached to it. Instead, the press email includes this:
“Starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, this Cannes sensation turns toxic beauty culture inside out with a be-careful-what-you-wish-for fable for the ages. Explosive, provocative and twisted, THE SUBSTANCE confirms Coralie Fargeat as a thrillingly original and visionary filmmaker.
Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?
You. Only better in every way. Seriously.
You’ve got to try this new product, The Substance.
IT CHANGED MY LIFE.
It generates another you.
A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect, you.
And there’s only one rule: You share time.
One week for you. One week for the new you.
Seven days each. A perfect balance.
Easy. Right?”
If Fargeat’s last film, the superb rape-revenge film Revenge, is anything to go by, we’re in for quite a ride.
The Substance is in UK and Irish cinemas 20th September.
