The Terminator is becoming an anime series for Netflix, it’s been revealed. More details this way.
Things have been quiet around The Terminator ever since the commercial failure of Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019, although the film was more warmly received by fans than other recent entries in the franchise. That said, the bar was not set too high by its immediate predecessor.
Netflix has now jumped in, anyway, and revealed details of an anime series called, appropriately enough, Terminator: The Anime Series.
The synopsis reads as follows:
2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity. Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.
Matt Tomlin is the showrunner, executive producer and writer. Tomlin is also currently co-writing the sequel to The Batman with Matt Reeves, having performed uncredited script revisions on the first film. Best of all, it’s being animated by Production IG, the respected studio behind everything from Ghost In The Shell to the animated sequence in Kill Bill Vol. 1 to Psycho-Pass.
There is currently no word on whether Arnold Schwarzenegger or Linda Hamilton will reprise their roles in voiceover.
We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
