Inspector Gadget is next for the big screen reboot treatment.
Not too many people have fond memories of 1999’s Inspector Gadget movie, that starred Matthew Broderick in the title role, and had Rupert Everett on support duties. In fairness to the movie, it had a terrific mid-end-credits moment, but it sadly as a broader film all fell a bit flat. The sequel changed cast and was a straight to DVD effort.
But! It’s reboot time. Disney is set to mine the property again, and it’s hired Saturday Night Live writers Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day to pen the screenplay for the new film. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who recently oversaw the studio’s live action Aladdin do-over, are producing this one.
Whether this project will see the inside of a cinema is a good question. There’s a strong chance that this one is actually being made for the Disney+ streaming service, although no announcement to that end has been made.
Furthermore, we don’t know who’s directing, and we don’t know who’s starring. We just know that it exists.
As we hear more, we’ll keep you posted.
