Death In Her Hands will bring together Tilda Swinton and director David Lowery for a new whodunnit. More on the project here.
Tilda Swinton is a unique actor known for seeking out projects that challenge the artistic potential of cinema. (She also did Doctor Strange.)
Similarly, with films such as A Ghost Story and The Green Knight on his filmography, David Lowery often adopts the same approach as a director.
It’s intriguing then to see that See-Saw Films is backing Lowery’s next project, an ‘anarchic whodunnit’ called Death In Her Hands which will star Swinton in an adaptation of the cult novel by Ottessa Moshfegh.
Screen Daily broke the news, with Lowery describing the project as a ‘devious challenge’ to tackle. The filmmaker is currently in post-production on on the Anne Hathaway-starring Mother Mary, a movie that we’re hoping to see in 2025. Lowery has a particular way of describing his projects: Death In Her Hands is a “devious challenge”, and he previously admitted that Mother Mary “baffled” him as a filmmaker.
Tilda Swinton is no stranger to projects that might also be described in such terms. She last starred in 2024’s The End, a typically far-out project which was dubbed as an apocalyptic musical. In her upcoming collaboration with Lowery, Swinton plays ‘Vesta Gul, a recently widowed woman who, while walking in the woods near her new home, comes across a chilling handwritten note. Scrawled on paper is the words: “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body.” But there is no body or signs of death where the note was found.’
Naturally, we’re assuming that the plot then sees Swinton’s character attempt to solve the mysterious death – if there even was a death at all. See what we mean? We’re baffled already. But it’s a rewarding state of bafflement, and we’re hoping for more of that when the film finally arrives.
It might be a good while yet though, and no production date has been publicly announced. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
