A four hour documentary about the work and life of Tim Burton is on the way from director Tara Wood. More on the project here.

It’s been a couple of years since this was first announced, but a detailed documentary series about filmmaker Tim Burton now looks like it’s complete, and ready to head into the world.

It’s the work of director Tara Wood, who debuted the first episode last summer, but has now completed all four. The series will take Tim Burton’s story from his childhood through to 2024’s huge hit, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Furthermore, it’s said to feature some of his previously-unseen home movies, as well as photos from his youth.

Tara Wood, who previously made QT8: The First Eight, has interviewed many of Tim Burton’s collaborators as part of her new series, which is thus far untitled. Interviewees include Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, Jenna Ortega, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and Danny Elfman, although Tim Burton himself isn’t interviewed as part of it. However, he was aware of the film, and Tara Wood did seek his permission. Presumably, given she’s had access to his personal archive, he has been involved as well.

The plan originally was for this to be a feature film, but the story grew to the point that we now have a four-part series instead.

Distribution details for the series are still unknown, but surely there’s a streamer out there interesting in a four hour documentary of this ilk.

In the meantime, a trailer for it has landed, that you can see here…

And the synopsis for it?

Follow Tim Burton’s dream journey into the themes and relationships that shape his work, from the Misunderstood Monster to the dichotomy of dark vs light, and the magic of collaboration with fellow “outsiders” Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter, and more…

More on this as we hear it, not least for details of its actual release…
