Dwayne Johnson had two films out in 2024, and theyāve earned him slightly about the national minimum wage. More here.
He may well urinate in bottles when he’s on a movie set, but it sounds as though Dwayne Johnson can afford to employ a few people to clean it up. The annual Forbes list of the best paid actors of the year has been published, and the 2024 list has put The Rock at the top.
Johnson, the famed star of 2010ās Tooth Fairy, has been been paid in the region of $88m for two films he appeared in last year.
The first was the hugely expensive Red One, Amazon’s Christmas blockbuster of which he was arguably the worst bit. He was said to have pocketed some $50m for appearing in the movie, which went on to gross $185m worldwide. That didn’t cover the negative cost of the movie, but then it was always intended to be Amazon’s streaming extravaganza for 2024, and so it proved to be.
The other movie that Johnson popped up in was the hugely disappointing Moana 2. Well, hugely disappointing as a movie, but not as a piece of commerce. It gave Walt Disney Animation Studios a much-needed hit, crossing $1bn at the global box office.
Originally intended to be a straight to streaming exercise, when it pivoted to a theatrical release, in went Dwayne Johnson’s agent to retool the deal. Johnson was apparently paid a percentage of the profits. It means his total earning for his two films in 2024 could yet cross the $100m mark.
He narrowly edged out Ryan Reynolds, who landed in second place with earnings of $85m. That was made up of Deadpool & Wolverine, IF and Welcome To Wrexham’s latest season.
The highest paid woman on the list was Nicole Kidman, picking up $31m for a series of TV miniseries, as well as the movies A Family Affair and Babygirl.
Monopoly money, innit. Anyway, just off to raid the coppers jar to see if we can afford a bit more coffee.
