Guillermo del Toro returns for his first film since 2017’s The Shape Of Water – you can get a glimpse right here.
The full trailer has landed for Nightmare Alley, the new pitch-black noir from director Guillermo del Toro. This marks his first foray back into directing since 2017’s The Shape Of Water, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director. The film also won a trio of other Oscars, including Best Picture.
Now, del Toro is back, and in a rare departure from the space he usually inhabits, his next film will be devoid of monsters and supernatural elements.
Based on the 1946 book of the same name, Nightmare Alley boasts an impressive cast, with Cate Blanchett alongside Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, David Strathairn, Tim Blake Nelson and Mary Steenburgen.
The director spoke to Collider about the film a while ago, stating that he was relishing the opportunity to make a straight noir, rather than exploring the more fantastical avenues his work is normally renowned for.
He explained that the “book was given to me in 1992 by Ron Perlman and I loved the book. My adaptation that I’ve done with [co-writer] Kim Morgan is not necessarily – the entire book is impossible, it’s a saga. But there are elements that are darker in the book, and it’s the first chance I have – in my short films I wanted to do noir. It was horror and noir. And now is the first chance I have to do a real underbelly of society type of movie. [There are] no supernatural elements. Just a straight, really dark story.”
You can catch the trailer below. The film is set to launch in January
