What We Do In The Shadows will end with its upcoming season 6, it’s been announced: more on the news here.

What We Do In The Shadows began life as a feature film in 2014, written and directed by Flight Of The Concords star Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The latter of those two has gone on to direct Jojo Rabbit and has become a creative force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, infusing the franchise with his signature humorous approach (even if he took the job to keep food on the table.)

What We Do In The Shadows inspired two television series. The first was Wellington Paranormal, which began in 2016 and followed police officers Minogue and O’Leary, played by Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary respectively, who were minor characters in the film. It ran for four seasons from 2018 to 2022.

The television version of What We Do In The Shadows then began in 2019. It stars Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Mark Proksch, Harvey Guillén and Kristen Schaal. The show follows a group of vampire friends as they navigate the trails and tribulations of life in Staten Island in New York, as their traditional values clash wildly with the modern day.

According to Vulture, the upcoming What We Do In The Shadows season 6 will be the last, with production scheduled to begin in January.

Ratings have reportedly been falling on American TV, with this summer’s fifth series averaging around 275,000 viewers per episode on the FX channel – although streaming figures from its slot on Hulu are not available.

At next month’s Critics Choice Television Awards in the US it is up for best comedy, with Novak and Guillén up for acting awards.

Waititi’s latest film, Next Goal Wins, which follows an American football coach who is dispatched to New Zealand to try and improve the fortunes of the worst team in the world, is released in UK cinemas on Boxing Day.
