Cry havoc, and all that – we’ve got another pulse-pounding historical epic on the horizon. Hooray! More on the William Tell movie below:

Here at Film Stories, we are (read: I am) fans of exactly two things – Robert Eggers’ 2022 Viking epic The Northman, and the first two episodes of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s monstrously underrated post-Sherlock miniseries, Dracula. Everything else we talk about is just filler, really.

Until now! Because what do the two above projects have in common? Danish actor and musician Claes Bang, of course! And The Square star has a new project on the horizon in the form of Nick Hamm’s upcoming historical biopic, William Tell, about the famed 14th century marksman, which is now set for a UK cinema release on 10th January 2025.

The film’s short ‘n’ sweet synopsis reads thusly:

“As the nations of medieval Europe struggle for power, the ruthless Austrian Empire invades Switzerland, and a peaceful huntsman, William Tell, is thrust into the heart of their resistance.”

The version of Tell who doesn’t look like Claes Bang was a Swiss folk hero, expert mountain climber and dab-hand with a crossbow. According to legend, he assassinated tyrant and all-round wrong-un Albrecht Gessler, inspiring a popular rebellion which would lead to the founding of the Swiss Confederacy. He sounds like a busy man – and pitch-perfect historical epic fodder if ever we saw one.

Joining Bang in a nicely stacked cast are Connor Swindells, Ellie Bamber, Jonathan Pryce, Jonah Hauer-King, Rafe Spall and Ben Kingsley. There are probably others, too – popular rebellions don’t tend to go far with seven people.

However large the cast ends up being, we could do with some crowd-pleasing derring-doo, and this looks just the ticket. More on William Tell when we have it.
