Francis Lawrence’s take on Stephen King’s The Long Walk arrives this autumn. Here’s the trailer for the film.

Stephen King fans have been patiently waiting for an adaptation of his novella The Long Walk ever since The Shawshank Redemption director and frequent King collaborator Frank Darabont snapped up the rights years and years ago, with the intention of making it himself.

For various reasons, Darabont’s take on the tale of a dystopian future where teenagers walk to their deaths in a grotesque ‘sports contest’ never came to fruition, but with Francis Lawrence, director of several The Hunger Games movies behind the camera, The Long Walk is now finally on the horizon, coming to us courtesy of Lionsgate.

The film is slated to release in September of this year, with Cooper Hoffman, star of Licorice Pizza taking one of the film’s major parts, while David Jonsson – who starred in Alien: Romulus– will also play a key role. Mark Hamill and Judy Greer also feature.

For the time being, we’ll leave you with a synopsis below and of course, the trailer.

‘The Long Walk takes place in the future in which 100 teenage boys embark on an annual competition known as “The Long Walk.” The rules are simple: maintain a speed above 4 miles per hour. Receive three warnings in an hour and you’re shot dead. The last one walking gets whatever he wants for the rest of his life. Under these grim circumstances the boys develop deep friendships despite knowing that each of their friends’ survival is a threat to their own. The book has the spirit of other King coming-of-age stories, following boys who prevail amid hardship and despair ala the characters in Stand by Me and It.’
