After eight years in retirement, Daniel Day-Lewis is returning to acting in Anemone, a collaboration with his son, director Ronan Day-Lewis.

Daniel Day-Lewis is widely considered to be one of the greatest actors of all time, and with three Oscars on his mantle and a filmography for the ages, that opinion isn’t likely to change. Day-Lewis hasn’t appeared in a film since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but with movies like There Will Be Blood, My Beautiful Laundrette and My Left Foot to his name, his place in on the list of all-time greats is assured.

Day-Lewis retired from acting eight years ago, sticking to the maxim of ‘always leave ’em wanting more.’ But now he’s returned to collaborate with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, on Anemonea family drama also set to star Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green. The film is said to explore “familial bonds” with a special focus on fathers, sons and brothers. The Day-Lewises reportedly wrote the script together.

An October release places Anemone squarely in the ‘awards magnet’ window, so will Day-Lewis’ return from a self-imposed exile result in him going on yet another Oscars run? It’s the kind of narrative that Hollywood adores, so who knows.

Deadline broke the announcement of the film’s October release, while also noting that Martin Scorsese mentioned last year on the topic of Day-Lewis that “We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life… maybe there’s time for one more.”

Scorsese’s future is also a little unsure at the moment, with one or two folks speculating that his upcoming Hawaii-set crime thriller could be his last film. But surely the thought of one more collaboration between Scorsese and Day-Lewis would be too much for either man to turn down? We can certainly hope.

Anemone shot in the north of England last year and is expected to release in the UK at the same time as the US, with a wide release on the 10th of October. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
