Luca Guadagnino is to direct Artificial, a telling of the behind the scenes stories behind the company OpenAI.

Keeping up with Luca Guadagnino’s ever-shifting film slate is always a fun form of brain training, given that the director’s roster of upcoming projects seems to change more than most filmmakers’ project lists, sometimes even on a monthly basis. As such, you have to stay fairly sharp to stay on top of Guadagnino’s list of upcoming films.

Interestingly, it looks like the latest addition to his slate could also be the next to go before cameras.

According to Deadline, Guadagnino is planning to use the window recently afforded to him by the suspension of his Sgt Rock adaptation to instead shoot Artificial, a film charting the drama at AI company OpenAI that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days back in 2023.

If you recall, the Challengers director – who will next be releasing After The Hunt starring Julia Roberts – was due to start work next on an adaptation of the DC Comics’ grizzled World War II combat veteran before that got pushed back, with the unpredictable weather here in the UK being cited as part of the reason.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Guadagnino seems to have just pulled another project from a seemingly endless reserve and is reportedly moving quickly to lock in a production window later this year, which will in turn allow him to get back to Sgt Rock in 2025. We presume that on his occasional day off, he’s also commissioned the construction of some kind of device to control the weather here in the UK, but that might just be wild speculation on our part.

American writer and wit Simon Rich wrote the script to Artificial; meanwhile, the leading trio of actors looks rather intriguing. Andrew Garfield will be collaborating with Guadagnino again, following his co-starring turn with Julia Roberts in the upcoming After The Hunt, due for release in October.

A Complete Unknown's Monica Barbaro and Anora's Yura Borisov will also join him.

We’ll bring you more as we hear it, but will this be Luca giving us his version of The Social Network? If so, that’s a rather fun possibility, and we’re absolutely here for it.
