More Ma is in the pipeline, with Blumhouse set to revive Octavia Spencer’s creepy matriarch Sue Ann for Ma 2.
If you were a fan of 2019’s Ma, the Blumhouse horror film that featured Octavia Spencer as the titular character, then you’ll enjoy this announcement: Ma 2 is on the way.
Spencer starred in the original Ma as Sue Ann, ‘a lonely woman who befriends a group of teens and allows them to use her basement for parties.’
Tate Taylor directed, with Scotty Landes penning the script that saw Spencer’s Ma taking wayward teens under her wing before becoming just a bit too interested in them for comfort.
While Ma didn’t set the world alight with the critics, it clearly performed well enough commercially – grossing $61m worldwide – that Blumhouse is happy to commission another. The way Blumhouse projects are usually set up, films are made pretty cheaply, which means that most of its output ends up making a profit.

In the case of Ma, the seemingly modest sum of $61m was clearly enough to persuade Blumhouse to give Spencer a chance to reprise the character.
No director or writer has been announced for the sequel, but Jason Blum did release a statement saying: “Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”
Spencer’s creepy performance was the best thing about the original film, so it will be fun to see her take on the role once more. Bloody Disgusting broke the news, and when we hear more regarding the project’s director or a release date, we’ll let you know.
