The cast for Practical Magic 2 keeps growing and Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are set to reprise their roles from the original.
We’re still some ways away from Practical Magic 2, a sequel to the witchy 1998 cult favourite, but exciting casting news have reached the Film Stories news desk.
Original leads Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman – who plates magical sisters Sally and Gillian Owens – are confirmed to return for the sequel. Now, Deadline reports that Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing will also reprise their roles from the first film.
Wiest played Gillian and Sally’s Aunt Jet while Stockard was Aunt Franny. The pair took in the sisters after their parents perished, thanks to a nasty family curse.
Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod have also joined the cast in unknown roles while Joey King will play Sally’s daughter in the new film. Plot details are sparse, but the film is rumoured to be based on another Practical Magic novel from writer Alice Hoffman.
“Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens’ story to new fans, and those who’ve been with us since the beginning,” the filmmaking team said in a statement.
The original Practical Magic received mixed reviews from critics, who found the film’s multiple different genres and campy comedy jarring, and the movie failed to recoup its production budget in cinemas initially. Over the years, the film has gathered a loyal fan base. Its feminist themes especially have struck a chord with audiences over the years, not to mention the positively wacky performances by Kidman, Bullock, Wiest and Channing.
Bird Box director Susanne Bier is helming the sequel, which is set to hit cinemas 18th September 2026.
