A sequel to 1998 fantasy drama Practical Magic is in the works, with stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in talks to return.
According to Deadline, Bullock and Kidman are in talks to reprise their roles for a sequel to the 1998 fantasy, Practical Magic. Akiva Goldsman will return to write the script. Alice Hoffman, who wrote the original novel in 1995, also published a sequel called The Book Of Magic in 2021.
It hasn’t been confirmed if Goldsman is adapting the novel or working on a new story. There is currently no director attached. Bullock and Kidman will also produce alongside the original film’s producer Denise Di Novi.
Practical Magic put a slightly different spin in the romantic drama. Based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, whose family has been plagued for generations by a curse that kills any man they fall in love with. They have to use their magic to destroy the spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend. The film also starred Goran Visnjic, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest and Aidan Quinn.
Directed by Griffin Dunne from a screenplay by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks, the film didn’t succeed at the box office initially but has since become a cult classic.
A pilot for a television adaptation called Sudbury, named after the town in the film, was made in 2004, but it wasn’t picked up for a full series. Hoffman also wrote two prequel novels – The Rules of Magic in 2017 and Magic Lessons in 2020.
It’s a busy time for Kidman, who already has on her slate – deep breath – Netflix romcom A Family Affair, which streams from the 28th June, Netflix murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, Amazon series Kay Scarpetta and feature thriller Holland, Michigan, the second series of Paramount+’s Lioness and Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, and Halina Reijn’s A24 pic Babygirl. Oh, and ongoing talks for series 3 of Big Little Lies.
Bullock was last seen in Bullet Train and The Lost City, as well as the acclaimed Netflix films Bird Box and The Unforgivable.
