Tom Cruise has sent back his three Golden Globes, as discontent over slow reforms of the awards continues to grow.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is under deep scrutiny over its Golden Globes, an awards show that Hollywood appears to be very much falling out of love with.
The Golden Globes have been under the microscope since a report in the Los Angeles Times highlighted the tiny voting membership, a group of people who appear neither diverse nor particularly representative. The HFPA announced a series of reforms to tackle that, and also bringing in restrictions for the gifts its members could receive, but the fact that broadcast partner NBC has pulled out of screening the ceremony in 2022 tells you how well that’s gone down. NBC paid tens of millions of dollars for the privilege, the main source of income for the HFPA.
Furthermore, in a high profile protest, Tom Cruise – who has won three Golden Globes in his career – has returned them. He picked up the prizes for Born Of The Fourth Of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia, and has now returned them to the headquarters of the HFPA. There’s a strong chance that other recipients over the years will now follow suit.
The story continues to evolve, and the onus is very much now on the HFPA to come up with something far more sweeping than its announcement to date.
