Empire Of Light will mark Mendes’ first film since 1917, and he’s assembling quite the cast ahead of production.

Any new Sam Mendes project is always worth exploring, and whilst we were big fans of his kinetic World War 1  drama, 1917, we’re excited that he seems to be planning  a return to more traditional drama for his next project, Empire Of Light. The film will mark Mendes’ first solo production with Searchlight Pictures, and whilst very little is known about the story, what we do know sounds intriguing, as it is set to be ‘a love story centered around 1980s England and a stunning old movie theatre.’

What’s more, the cast seems to be coming along nicely too. Deadline is reporting that Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward will be joined by Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke, and Tanya Moodie.

Mendes is writing and producing the project with his regular collaborator Pippa Harris through their company Neal Street Productions. Also returning to work with Mendes again will be Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won the most recent of his two awards for working with Mendes on 1917.

Both in front of the camera and behind, there’s plenty in place to be excited about Mendes’ next project, not least the fact he’s returning to Britain to tell a story. We’ll bring you more as we hear it.
