It’s a bit more complicated than saying his name three times, but Beetlejuice’s return may yet happen.
After many years of rumours and near misses, it looks like Beetlejuice 2 might actually be heading to our screens.
The belated sequel is set to reunite Micheal Keaton and Winona Ryder in a follow up to Tim Burton’s goofy 1988 supernatural comedy which is beloved by many. Whilst Warner Bros, the studio backing the project, has yet to give the green light, the recently-announced involvement of Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment might just be enough to get things into gear. Plan B has an impressive track record and due to the upcoming Flash movie, Keaton himself is also back in the limelight as a box-office draw as he once more dons the cape and cowl of Batman, his most famous role.
Everything looks set to happen this time with one notable exception yet to be addressed. No news has surfaced yet as to whether Tim Burton, the original film’s director, will be returning.
Burton planned a Beetlejuice sequel for years after the original, with the suggested title being Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. But due to a host of reasons, the follow-up never happened. The original film was unique in the sense that it could have only been imagined from the mind of Tim Burton, so we’d hope that his involvement is announced at some point.
Other versions of the sequel have come and gone in the years since, including an iteration that Kevin Smith was invited to direct in the late 90s and a few other versions that never made it past the scripting phase. The involvement of Plan B changes things dramatically however and means that this time, the sequel may really happen. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
