RJ Cutler and David Furnish are to co-direct a new Elton John documentary, which will encompass live footage and home video
Itās a good time to be an Elton John fan. 2019ās
Rocketman was a wonderful celebration of Johnās career and legacy, while 2020 brought about
The Lockdown Sessions, an album of collaborations with the likes of Charlie Puth, Stevie Wonder and Stevie Nicks.
Now, as John embarks on what is promised to be his final world tour, Disney has announced a documentary to accompany it. Following John as he performs around the world, the film promises previously unreleased live footage as well as capturing his final ever live shows, which are set to be performed at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles next year.
Co-directing the film are Johnās long time partner David Furnish and RJ Cutler, who has form in music documentaries, having previously helmed 2021ās
Billie Eilish: The Worldās a Little Blurry. Furnish said of the project that “Elton and I could not think of a better collaborator than R J Cutler for a film that represents more than just Elton’s career ā it’s his life. From the Troubadour to Dodger Stadium, we knew that R J would help guide Elton’s story and its many layers in a way that feels authentic and evocative. We’re ecstatic to be working together”.
John has been the subject of documentaries in the past, perhaps most notably 1995ās
Tantrums and Tiaras, again directed by Furnish. It chronicled Johnās
Made In England tour and was nominated for a BAFTA.
The film, titled
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and The Years That Made His Legend, will have a limited theatrical release before going to Disney+. A release date has not yet been announced.
