Over a decade and change since Tron: Legacy, the trailer for Tron: Ares suggests the franchise might be on track.
After showing a five minute sneak peek at CinemaCon last week that was exclusively for those in attendance, Disney has now released the first trailer for Tron: Ares. Directed by Young Woman And The Sea filmmaker Joachim Rønning and starring Jeff Bridges and Jared Leto, the film is set for release this October.
The story is said to pick up narrative threads left from 2010ās Tron: Legacy. This new film will focus on āa highly sophisticated program names Ares (Jared Leto) who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings.ā
If the thought of Jared Leto playing an AI being doesnāt float your boat (he has Jeff Bridgesā seal of approval), thereās still plenty of other elements here to keep things interesting. The wonderful Gillian Anderson will be appearing, alongside Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, and Cameron Monaghan. Plus, thereās the return of Bridges as Kevin Flynn, the seriesā stalwart.
Nine Inch Nails has composed the score, perhaps the most exciting aspect to the filmās production for fans of the band and/or the genius musical compositions of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Whether they can top Daft Punkās seminal score from Tron: Legacy weāll have to wait and see, but the baton is certainly in good hands.
Certainly, the premise of Tronās world colliding with the real one is a fun idea, although weāre still hoping that a sizeable portion of the movie occurs within the digital realm. After all, itās the strange allure of the Grid that has kept fans coming back to this series for decades so it would be a shame if the film is set in a world which we can see just by peering outside of our window. Weāll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
