In the absence of TRON: Legacyās composers, the legendary Daft Punk, TRON: Ares has turned to Nine Inch Nails instead for its score.
While not everybody was a fan of 2010ās TRON: Legacy, the film certainly hit in one particular regard: its incredible score was the result of what seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime bit of creative coupling. The film, which is of course largely set inside inside a digital world, was scored by Daft Punk, the electronic house duo who spent their decades-long career masquerading as synthetic beings. At least we think it was a masquerade. Who knows, really?
Anyway, the collaboration led to an excellent soundtrack but more than a few impediments lay in the way of Daft Punk returning for a reprise. The duo are now all but retired, at least as Daft Punk, while according to the studio.
The upcoming sequel TRON: Ares would have to go some way then, to finding a composer who could match the might of Daft Punk but maybe, just maybe, it might have happened. At D23 over the weekend, it was revealed that none other than Nine Inch Nails will score TRON: Ares.
While the band needs no introduction, two of its current members are likely better known to film fans as Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The duo are behind some of the the last decadesā most celebrated scores, beginning with David Fincher’s The Social Network. That collaboration kickstarted a pairing that has endured through numerous Fincher films.
Most recently, Reznor and Ross composed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and the absolutely banging soundtrack to Luca Guagagninoās Challengers.
It looks like all of Reznorās band could be involved with composing the soundtrack to TRON: Ares though, and thatās a fascinating prospect to consider. There werenāt many names that the production could have attached to rival the name value and suitability of Daft Punk to the style of the film, but the involvement of Reznor and Ross fits the bill.
In the new film, Jared Leto ā yep, him ā will play the titular Ares, ‘a computer program who has escaped the grid and come to our real world.’ Franchise star, Jeff Bridges will return, whilst Joachim Rønning directs. Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins are all set to appear in the film which is slated to release in October of next year. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
