The iconic French characters Asterix and Obelix are heading back to the big screen in 2023 – the first time in years.

Asterix and Obelix began life in the comic book series created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1959. It depicted their adventures as they rebelled against the Roman Empire during the rule of Julias Caesar.

The most famous versions of Asterix and Obelix were played by Gérard Depardieu and Christian Clavier (replaced in the third and fourth films by Clovis Cornillac and Edouard Baer, respectively) in a series of films from 1999 to 2012.

Now, the franchise is being rebooted by noted French filmmaker Guillaume Canet, who directed 2008’s Cesar award winning thriller Tell No One, with Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (French title: Astérix et Obélix: l’Empire du Milieu).

The plot will follow the titular characters as they attempt to help Princess Fu Yi, who has escaped the evil clutches of a rogue prince and is on the run.

The director is also starring in the film as Asterix, with Gilles Lellouche taking on the role of Obelix. Surrounding them is a star studded ensemble cast which includes Vincent Cassel and Marion Cotillard.

It is set to be released on the 1st February 2023. And here’s the new poster that’s just been issued…
