Margot Robbieā€™s LuckyChap is partnering with Amazon Studios to bring The Sims to the movies ā€“ more details here.

While weā€™ve covered several stories this year that claimed an adaptation of videogame sensation The Sims was in the works, itā€™s now official. Amazon Studios has announced that the project is officially happening, with Margot Robbieā€™s LuckChap Productions behind the movie.

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 20 years, The Sims is video game series published by Electronic Arts, The Sims series of games fall into the life simulator genre, allowing you to create and then oversee the lives of countless suburban residents. If you’ve ever fancied playing God, The Sims essentially allows you to do that, giving you the freedom to be a benevolent overlord (build your sims a new house) or a vengeful deity (burn down your sims’ new house). Why not both, say we.

In the game, there is no real narrative apart from the one that you shape yourself. Still, fans of the games will be wondering if some storylines from the series could appear, including the mysterious fate of Bella Goth. Netflix wanted the project too (and who wouldnā€™t given the run that LuckyChap is on in the wake of Barbie's stunning success?). The streamer reportedly even offered more for the film’s rights, but Amazon MGM ultimately won by promising the film a theatrical release, something Netflix will not countenance.

While there’s no official news on who might star in The Sims, Robbie herself is of course an option here following Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which she also produced and was Oscar-nominated for.

However, it seems that she has a very packed slate. She’s currently developing a Monopoly film and it was recently confirmed a Pirates Of The Caribbean film with her in the lead is still moving forward.

Robbie has also been attached to an Avengelyne film, based on a comic book hero of the same name and thereā€™s that Oceanā€™s prequel with Ryan Gosling.

Kate Herron, known for directing the first season of Disney+ series Loki, will pen the scrip alongside Briony Redman. Hopefully some of that seriesā€™ weirdness will find its way into The Sims. Itā€™s a bittersweet day for fans of the game as publisher EA also revealed that the long-awaited fifth instalment of the series has been shelved. At least fans have a movie to look forward to though. Weā€™ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
