Get your first look at anticipated drama The Woman King, which is heading to the UK in October: more here.
The first trailer has released for The Woman King, starring the eminently-talented Viola Davis, not to mention John Boyega. Davis leads the cast, playing ‘Nanisca, General of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, sworn to protect Dahomey. Boyega will reportedly play Dahomey’s ruler, King Ghezo.
The film is directed by The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood. The helmer turned down the chance to make a sequel to the successful Netflix action flick to instead focus on this project, which is being backed by Sony and Entertainment One and is set to release in October in the UK.
The official synopsis for the film reads as such: ‘the project is inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Viola Davis), general of an all-female military unit, and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fight enemies who violated their honour, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.’
