The chances of another Terminator trilogy are not looking great after the film’s underwhelming US box office opening.
Further problems for the Terminator franchise, as the latest in the saga – Terminator: Dark Fate – looks like it may be defeated by a foe from the present rather than the future: the box office.
The $185m franchise reboot and sequel all in one has actually opened to better reviews than the last few entries in the series, but there were warning signs last week with its UK release, when it failed to crack the top spot.
Notwithstanding too the fact that this is the only Terminator film not to open in the middle of summer, the US opening took place this weekend past, and that fell short too. It grossed $29m in the States, way below what was hoped for. It didn’t fare too much better elsewhere in the world, with the film’s global haul standing at $123m thus far.
There’s still some road ahead in terms of box office, and all eyes will be on Chinese box office figures.
But there’s now a very real chance that Dark Fate will be the third Terminator film in a row that tries to launch a new trilogy of films, and struggles to do so.
