Andrew Niccol is making a sequel to Lord Of War, and Nicolas Cage is reprising his role in the new film too.
In what might just be the most surprising sequel news of the year, writer and director Andrew Niccol is making a follow up to his terrific 2005 film Lord Of War.
The film followed Nicolas Cage as Yuri Orlov, a composite character based on multiple real life arms dealers. Ethan Hawke played the agent hell bent on bringing him down. It’s worth mentioning the interrogation scene, where the power play between Cage and Hawke builds to a brilliantly written monologue in which Cage calmly explains exactly why he’s untouchable.
In the sequel, which will be called Lords Of War, Cage will reprise his role as Orlov, with Bill Skarsgard joining the cast as Orlov’s son Anton. The synopsis reads as follows:
Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, discovers he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who isn’t trying to right his father’s wrongs — he’s trying to top them. Not only selling guns but the “trigger pullers” too, Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This is the story of Yuri and Anton’s bitter rivalry — even at odds over the same woman. Who will prevail when father and son go to war?
Niccol will once again write and direct, with producers Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi returning. Cage and Skarsgard will also executive produce.
Niccol said of the sequel that “There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best – ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate son – who turns out to not be legitimate in any way”.
